Helicopter footage from Chopper 7 captured the scene, showing a house cordoned off with crime scene tape in the 200 block of Green Bay Road in Highwood at approximately 5:30 p.m.
Highwood officers were dispatched to conduct a welfare check on a man reportedly in a highly intoxicated and suicidal state. A relative, who was not present at the scene, had informed 911 that the man’s ex-girlfriend was also in the home with him.
According to a statement from the Highwood police, upon arrival, officers discovered the man had barricaded himself in a bathroom. The man allegedly claimed to be armed and warned officers, expressing hope they were wearing protective vests. He then emerged suddenly with a pistol aimed at the officers, prompting one officer to fire their weapon, striking the individual.
The man was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, police said.
Investigators recovered what appeared to be a “replica pistol.”
