JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A 7-year-old boy was killed and a 21-year-old man was injured after a shooting on Jacksonville’s Westside Friday evening.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said multiple shooters in a dark Kia Soul pulled up on the man and the child in the area of Commonwealth Avenue and Almeda Street with what detectives believe to be rifles and handguns.
Dozens of gunshots could be heard in surveillance footage obtained by First Coast News. Investigators said multiple homes were struck by gunfire, but no one else was injured.
The adult victim is believed to be gang-associated, JSO said. He was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The child was also hospitalized, but ultimately died.
JSO investigators believe the adult and child are related in some way.
A neighbor in the area told First Coast News she went to her window when she heard gunshots and saw two people, a driver and a passenger, exit a vehicle and fire into a house directly behind hers.
“By the time I looked, the kid was unfortunately already on the ground, face up,” she said.
