The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) is mourning the loss of one of its own, as announced by Commissioner Robert S. Tucker and Mayor Eric Adams. On Saturday, firefighter Patrick Brady, a respected member of the department for 11 years, tragically lost his life while on duty.
Brady, aged 42, was working on the roof of an apartment building in Brooklyn, handling an all-hands fire, when he experienced a sudden medical emergency. This medical episode resulted in cardiac arrest, according to a media release.
His fellow firefighters and emergency medical personnel on the scene acted swiftly, providing immediate care before transporting him to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center. Despite their efforts, Brady was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Commissioner Tucker expressed deep sorrow over the incident, stating, “The entire FDNY is heartbroken over the loss of Firefighter Patrick Brady. He was a dedicated public servant, and firefighting was in his blood. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and fellow members as we join them in mourning this immense loss.”

Brady’s untimely death marks a somber moment for the firefighting community, reflecting the inherent risks and sacrifices involved in their valiant efforts to protect the public.
Brady was a resident of Queens. He is survived by his wife, Kara, and his two brothers, Jimmy and Brian, who are also FDNY firefighters. Brady’s cousins and uncles also serve in the FDNY.
“Firefighter Brady came from a family of firefighters — all dedicated to protecting the lives of their fellow New Yorkers,” Mayor Adams said in a statement. “I would like to express my deepest sympathy to his wife, Kara, and his entire family during this difficult time.”
