James Van Der Beek, fondly remembered for his iconic role in the 1990s hit series Dawson’s Creek, has died at the age of 48. The heartbreaking announcement was made by his family via his official Instagram account on Wednesday, February 11, 2026:
“Our cherished James David Van Der Beek passed away peacefully this morning. He faced his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share about his wishes, his love for humanity, and the preciousness of time. Those moments will come. For now, we ask for privacy to mourn our beloved husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”
Van Der Beek received a diagnosis of colorectal cancer in 2023, which he publicly disclosed in 2024. Last September, he and his Dawson’s Creek co-stars held a live reading of the show’s pilot episode to support the charity F Cancer. Although he had to pull out at the last moment due to a stomach issue, he still made a heartfelt video appearance.
“I’ve been eagerly anticipating this evening for months ever since my dear friend Michelle Williams began organizing it,” Van Der Beek expressed. “It’s hard to believe I’m not there. It’s hard to believe I can’t see my wonderful cast mates in person.”
