() A second unvaccinated child in West Texas has died from a measles-related illness, a hospital spokesperson confirmed to the Associated Press Sunday.

The school-aged child was being treated at a hospital in Lubbock, Texas, which is an epicenter of the measles outbreak that has infected more than 600 people in the United States this year.

This marks the third death and the second of a child this year.

In February, the first child to die from measles was also in West Texas and unvaccinated. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that 97% of people who were diagnosed with measles this year were either unvaccinated or their vaccination status unknown.

The CDC has yet to reflect this death in its weekly report, and the hospital spokesperson did not reveal which day the child died.

Although the U.S. declared measles eradicated in 2000, meaning no transmission for at least 12 months, the total number of cases this year more than doubled from last year.

Twelve percent of current measles patients are hospitalized, as of April 3, according to the CDC.

Measles is an easily spread viral infection, largely in children, and can be mitigated by vaccines. Also called rubeola, it causes a red, blotchy rash on the face and the body, typically appearing 10-14 days after exposure.
