Tragedy struck Valencia CF as coach Fernando Martin and three members of his family lost their lives after their boat capsized in Indonesia, according to statements from Spanish football clubs.
Valencia CF expressed their profound sorrow over the loss, stating, “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Fernando Martin, coach of Valencia CF Femenino B, along with three of his children, in this tragic boat accident in Indonesia, as confirmed by local authorities.”
The unfortunate incident occurred when Martin and three of his children were reported missing after their boat, which was carrying 11 people, sank in severe weather conditions on Friday. The incident took place in the Padar Island Strait, near the tourist-frequented island of Labuan Bajo, according to both Indonesian and Spanish authorities on Saturday.
As of Sunday morning, the search efforts were ongoing, as confirmed by Fathur Rahman, the mission coordinator for Indonesia’s search and rescue agency in the region, in a statement to Reuters.
Real Madrid CF also expressed their condolences for the loss of Martin, who was 44 years old. Martin had played in Spain’s second-tier football league before taking on the role of coach for Valencia Women’s B team earlier this year.
His wife and one daughter, as well as four crew members and a tour guide, were rescued and safe, SAR said in a statement.
