HAMMONTON, N.J. (AP) — A tragic incident unfolded in southern New Jersey on Sunday when two helicopters collided midair, resulting in one fatality and leaving another person critically injured, according to officials.
The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that the crash involved a midair collision between the two aircraft.
Hammonton Police Chief Kevin Friel reported that emergency responders were dispatched around 11:25 a.m. following notifications of the aviation accident. Upon arrival, police and fire units worked swiftly to extinguish the fire that had engulfed one of the helicopters.
One person was killed and another was transported to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. Video from the scene showed a helicopter spinning rapidly to the ground.
The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board have been notified and will be investigating the crash, Friel said.
