LAS VEGAS — Tragedy struck in Las Vegas over the weekend when a mother fatally shot her pre-teen daughter, who was a cheerleader, before taking her own life in a hotel room, police reported.
The pair had traveled from Utah to Las Vegas to participate in a cheerleading competition, authorities confirmed.
Their lifeless bodies were found on Sunday afternoon at the Rio Hotel & Casino, located near the Vegas Strip. A note was discovered at the scene, providing some context to the heartbreaking incident.
As per ABC News, local Metro police were initially contacted for a welfare check on the mother and daughter early that morning. Officers, along with hotel security, attempted to reach them by knocking on their door and calling into the room, but received no reply.
Later that afternoon, after receiving further requests to check on their well-being, police decided to enter the room, where they made the grim discovery.
When they entered the room around 2:30 p.m., they found both of them unresponsive and suffering from gunshot wounds.
Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
Homicide detectives were able to determine from their investigation so far that the mother shot her daughter before shooting herself.
The incident remains under investigation.
