Tragedy struck outside a Walmart in Omaha on Tuesday when police were compelled to shoot and kill a woman who allegedly attacked a young boy with a knife. Authorities reported that the woman had taken the child from another shopper inside the store.

According to Deputy Chief Scott Gray, the suspect approached a female customer accompanied by a young boy, aged 2 or 3, and brandished a large knife she had stolen from the store. She then seized the child, effectively kidnapping him while threatening the boy’s guardian at knifepoint.

Gray detailed that the suspect ordered the woman to walk ahead of the shopping cart while she followed closely with the child. The tense situation escalated as they left the store and moved down a driveway, engaging in a heated exchange for several minutes until police arrived on the scene.

Upon responding to a 911 call, officers confronted the suspect outside the Walmart. Despite commands from the police, she began to make slashing motions with the knife, severely injuring the child by cutting his face. Gray mentioned that this distressing incident was caught on video. In response, at least one officer discharged their weapon, resulting in the suspect’s immediate death.

Police have released images from body-worn cameras showing the harrowing moment. The footage reveals the woman poised with a knife over the young boy, who was seated in a shopping cart, as an officer aimed their firearm at her in an attempt to prevent further harm.

The child was being treated at a hospital for a “rather large laceration” across the left side of his face and to one of his hands, Gray said. He is expected to survive.

It is unclear what provoked the suspect. Gray said the two women did not know each other. The relationship between the boy and his caretaker wasn’t clear. The suspect was not immediately identified.

Police are reviewing video from the store. The event appears to be an isolated incident, Gray said. The Walmart was largely empty as police continued their investigation, he said.

The actions inside the store wouldn’t necessarily have drawn attention from other shoppers, he said.

“They kind of just purposely but casually walk out of the store, so I don’t think anybody was actually looking at them as being a suspect of anything,” Gray said.

The police shooting will be investigated by Omaha police with help from the Nebraska State Patrol and the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office.
