JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Charles Faggart died Thursday after being left with “very bad injuries” from an incident Monday inside the Duval County Jail involving nine Jacksonville sheriff’s corrections officers, according to his family’s attorney.

Faggart, the owner of a Jacksonville food truck called ‘Chop It Charlie’s,’ was identified on Wednesday as the inmate involved in the incident that happened Monday. In a statement provided to First Coast News, his attorney, Belkis Plata, said Faggart suffered “catastrophic injuries” and was on a ventilator.

An attorney for Faggart’s family said in a statement Thursday that he was pronounced dead at 2:11 p.m. The attorney said Faggart had been “brain dead” since Monday.

On Tuesday, Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters said in a press conference that the nine corrections officers have been stripped of their duties and are under investigation for their involvement in the incident.

Waters said Faggart was taken to a local hospital in critical condition following the incident. He was arrested on April 1 for simple assault and criminal mischief, both misdemeanors, police records show.

When asked to describe Faggart’s injuries, Water said they were “bad enough for me to come out here and tell the public about it.” However, the sheriff did not elaborate on what happened in the incident nor how Faggart sustained his injuries.

“The family is devastated and demands answers regarding how Charles sustained such catastrophic injuries while in the custody and under the supervision of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office — a place where he should have been kept safe,” a portion of Plata’s statement reads.

Faggart’s family has posted a GoFundMe to assist with “mounting medical expenses and provide support” for Charles’s son Lincoln.

The full statement from Faggart’s attorney is below:

“I confirm that Mr. Faggart is the individual referenced in recent reports involving life-threatening injuries sustained while in custody at the Duval County Jail. Mr. Faggart remains hospitalized and is on a ventilator. The family is devastated and demands answers regarding how Charles sustained such catastrophic injuries while in the custody and under the supervision of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office — a place where he should have been kept safe.

This incident has placed an overwhelming emotional and financial burden on the family. Mr. Faggart is a father to a six-year-old son, who now faces the likelihood of growing up without a dad.

The family has established a GoFundMe page to assist with mounting medical expenses and provide support for Lincoln during this extremely difficult time.

The Faggart family respectfully requests privacy as they await answers. They are calling for a thorough and transparent investigation and for those responsible to be brought to justice.”

Investigation underway

Waters wrote in a statement Wednesday that the FBI will join the sheriff’s office and United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida in investigating what happened. Waters said in his statement that the incident is being treated as a “criminal investigation.”

The names of the officers involved in the incident have not been released.

“Transparency is the foundation of public trust,” Waters said in the statement on his decision. “The public’s confidence in the integrity of the April 7th critical incident investigation and in our agency’s commitment to transparency is of paramount concern to me.”

He said there was no other information that could be shared.
