In an official statement, Alderman Martinez confirmed the occurrence of a “police-involved shooting” within his jurisdiction, the 3rd Ward, which regrettably led to a loss of life.
The scene of the incident was marked by a significant police presence, with at least five evidence markers visible on the doorstep of a residence located near Leith and Ridgeland avenues in Waukegan.
According to the Waukegan Police Department, the situation began when three officers responded to a critical call involving a 58-year-old resident of Waukegan, who was reportedly attempting to end his own life.
The officers were involved in a shooting, Waukegan police said. Police and firefighters provided assistance, but the man died of his injuries.
The exact circumstances surrounding the shooting were not yet known. No one else was hurt.
Crime tape was wrapped around several homes. ABC7 also saw a Waukegan police cruiser towed away from the scene.

“The Illinois State Police Public Integrity Unit is currently leading the investigation at the scene,” Martinez said.
ABC7 has reached out to ISP to get more information about what happened, but has yet to hear back.
