In a tragic incident on Monday afternoon in Queens, a 13-year-old boy lost his life while riding on the back of a motorized scooter. The fatal accident occurred when the boy’s teenage friend, who was navigating the scooter, veered to avoid hitting an open car door and ended up crashing into a truck, according to police reports.
Authorities stated that the scooter, operated by another 13-year-old, was traveling southbound on 162nd Street near 45th Avenue in Flushing at approximately 12:40 p.m. The accident transpired as a driver exited a parked car, leaving the door ajar.
Faced with the sudden obstacle of an open car door, the young scooter driver attempted to steer clear. However, this quick maneuver led to a collision with a truck moving in the same direction, police reported.
The passenger was thrown from the scooter and tragically ended up making contact with the truck’s rear wheels, according to police statements.
Emergency services transported both boys to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. Sadly, the passenger did not survive his injuries, while the driver’s condition was reported as stable, authorities confirmed.
The truck driver stayed at the scene, authorities said.
No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing, according to police.
