STOCKTON, Calif. — A tragic mass shooting disrupted a child’s birthday celebration in California, leaving four dead, including three children, according to officials on Sunday. The incident also wounded 11 people, among them a 9-year-old.
According to the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office, the shooting occurred around 6 p.m. at a strip mall shopping center in Stockton, California.
Authorities revealed that the victims who lost their lives were aged 8, 9, 14, and 21 years old.
Among the injured is a 9-year-old who is currently in fair condition, as reported by Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Medical Center. The hospital issued a statement saying:
“Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Medical Center received three patients following the shooting in North Stockton. Two adults are being treated here—one with minor injuries and another who is undergoing surgery. A 9-year-old child also arrived at the emergency department and is reported to be in fair condition,” stated a hospital spokesperson. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are actively searching for the suspect or suspects responsible, promising to bring them to justice.

The city of Stockton’s vice mayor, Jason Lee, posted on Facebook on Saturday saying the shooting happened during a child’s birthday party.
Deputies said that “approximately 14 individuals were struck by gunfire, and four victims have been confirmed deceased.”
San Joaquin County District Attorney Ron Freitas and Mayor of Stockton Christina Fugazi have both indicated that children are among the victims who died.
Heather Brent, a spokesperson for the San Joaquin County sheriff’s office, said the gunshot victims included both children and adults.
Early indications “suggest this may have been a targeted incident,” Brent said during a news conference at the scene.
Detectives were still working to identify a possible motive.
