A tragic incident unfolded in Michigan City, Indiana, on Friday, leaving a community in mourning after a 14-year-old boy was fatally shot, according to police reports.
The family of the young victim, Devin Porter, is grappling with the heartbreaking loss, which is compounded by the fact that his siblings witnessed the aftermath as he sought their help inside the house.
Devin’s mother expressed her devastation, stating that her son did not deserve such a fate and emphasized the need for justice in the wake of this senseless act.

The shooting occurred at approximately 4:30 p.m. in the 300 block of West 11th Street. Responding officers discovered Devin inside a residence, suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he was later pronounced dead.

India Harrington says the last time spoke with her son he asked if he could go play basketball.
“He was 14. We were just talking about his birthday on the 24th. Now I gotta talk about burying my son,” Harrington said. “He was going the Y[MCA] out here, play ball… Next thing, I’m getting a phone call, my son gone.”
Porter’s sister says the shooting happened in broad daylight. She says she heard multiple gun shots before her 14-year-old brother ran into her room and collapsed as his young siblings took cover.
“His blood was on my hand,” she said. “We tried to turn him over. He was still trying to gasp for air, but his eyes was gone in the back of his head by the time they came, he was gone.”
Porter was a freshman at Michigan City High School. His mother said he was an honor roll student, beloved by his teachers. One of his true passions was basketball.

“My son didn’t deserve this,” Harrington said. “He ain’t do nothing to nobody. All he wanted to do is basketball, that’s all my baby wanted to do, and they took that from him.”
Porter’s family is scared to return to their home, concerned over what they called a recent uptick in shootings. A day before her son was killed, Michigan City Police say another juvenile was shot in the foot about half a mile away from their home.
“These kids is… innocent out here, getting hurt, killed, and all they, they don’t deserve this,” Harrington said. “My son didn’t deserve this. He didn’t do nothing to nobody.”
Police say detectives are continuing to interview witnesses and search for surveillance video.
