The coroner’s office classified Brown’s death as a homicide.
Officers responded just before 6:30 p.m. Saturday for a call of a shooting, police said.
A 9-year-old gunshot victim was found at a home at the location, officials said. He was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
A source told ABC7 Chicago that the child was driven to a hospital by relatives.
“The tragic nature of this event underscores the critical importance of responsible gun ownership and rigorous gun safety practices,” a news release from the Gary Police Department read in part. “Every firearm owner has a duty to ensure that weapons are properly secured and stored away from minors and unauthorized individuals to prevent accidental shootings and devastating losses.”
It’s not clear what led up to the deadly shooting.
