A tragic incident in Vero Beach, Florida, has resulted in the death of a locksmith who was shot during an eviction process. The locksmith’s passing has brought the total number of fatalities from last week’s shooting to three, as reported by the sheriff’s office.

The locksmith, 76-year-old David Long, was highly regarded for his “dedicated service and kind demeanor,” according to a statement by Sheriff Eric Flowers posted on social media this past Sunday.

Among the victims was Indian River County Sheriff’s Deputy Terri Sweeting-Mashkow, a 25-year veteran of the force, who lost her life when Michael Halberstam, the individual being evicted, opened fire on Friday morning. Halberstam succumbed to his injuries on Saturday, Sheriff Flowers confirmed.

Another officer, Deputy Florentino Arizpe, suffered a gunshot wound to the shoulder but was discharged from the hospital over the weekend, the sheriff stated.

The sheriff’s office had received seven calls from the home over the past month, “almost all” of which were from the mother calling about her son, the sheriff said during a news conference on Friday. Even so, he said, deputies weren’t expecting any trouble when they arrived to evict Halberstam.

Flowers did not say in his post if Sweeting-Mashkow and Long were wearing protective gear, and the sheriff’s office did not respond to an email on the matter Monday morning.
