A tragic shooting in Salt Lake City on Wednesday evening resulted in two fatalities and left at least six others wounded. The incident occurred outside a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints location, where attendees had gathered for a funeral.

In a statement, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints acknowledged the “serious incident” that unfolded at their meetinghouse situated at 660 North Redwood Road in Salt Lake City. The shooting transpired during a memorial service inside the chapel.

The Salt Lake Police Department reported that among the six individuals injured, three were in critical condition. Some victims were transported to a nearby hospital by private vehicles even before law enforcement officials could reach the scene.

Police were dispatched following reports of gunfire that erupted during the funeral at the Salt Lake City church.

“The Church is fully cooperating with law enforcement and appreciates the swift actions of first responders,” the church’s statement read. “For further inquiries, please refer to the Salt Lake City Police Department. Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected by this heartbreaking event, and we are deeply troubled that any place of worship could be a target of violence.”

Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, released a statement Wednesday describing the shooting as an act of “senseless violence.”

“Join me in praying for the victims of such senseless violence and all the families of this church,” he wrote on X. “Please contact local law enforcement if you have any information about the perpetrators.”
