CARSON CITY, Mich. (WOOD) While the saying goes that every epic journey starts with a single step, what about a trek spanning 2,200 miles through 14 states, navigating the equivalent elevation of scaling 16 Mount Everests?

If that seems overwhelming, it wasn’t for Betty Kellenberger. At the remarkable age of 80, she recently became the oldest woman to complete the entire Appalachian Trail. Now back home, she reflects on this monumental achievement.

“You witness incredible parts of our nation, sights you’d miss otherwise,” Kellenberger remarked, relaxing in her living room where a large rug maps out her hiking journey. “The wildlife is abundant and the scenery breathtaking.”
