LAKE CITY, Fla. — A Lake City woman training to become a correctional officer is facing charges after a joint investigation revealed she was planning to smuggle drugs into a Florida prison, authorities announced Monday.
Jakaleb Thomas, 28, was arrested by task force detectives after the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office received information that illegal narcotics were going to be delivered to her in Lake City, a release states.
Investigators said they learned that Thomas, who was a correction officer trainee at Suwannee Correctional Institute, was going to smuggle drugs into the prison.
A joint operation between the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office and Gainesville-Alachua County Drug Task Force seized 42 grams of crystal meth and 211 grams or marijuana from Thomas, authorities said.
Thomas was arrested and taken to the Columbia County Detention Facility without incident, authorities said. She is being held on a $333,000 bond.
The Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, Gainesville Police Department, Florida Highway Patrol, Lake City Police Department, Florida Department of Corrections Office of Inspector General and Drug Enforcement Administration assisted in the investigation.
