Trump slams Ukraine’s lack of ‘gratitude’ in wake of White House-backed peace plan to end war with Russia

In a striking turn of events, President Trump criticized Ukraine on Sunday for what he described as a lack of gratitude toward his administration’s efforts to broker peace in the ongoing conflict with Russia. This critique coincides with controversy surrounding a White House-endorsed peace proposal, which some argue favors Russian interests.

Trump took to Truth Social to voice his frustration, stating, “UKRAINE ‘LEADERSHIP’ HAS EXPRESSED ZERO GRATITUDE FOR OUR EFFORTS, AND EUROPE CONTINUES TO BUY OIL FROM RUSSIA.” His comments reflect ongoing tensions and highlight the complexities of international dynamics, particularly concerning military and economic alliances.

Further expressing his discontent, Trump pointed out, “THE USA CONTINUES TO SELL MASSIVE $AMOUNTS OF WEAPONS TO NATO, FOR DISTRIBUTION TO UKRAINE (CROOKED JOE GAVE EVERYTHING, FREE, FREE, FREE, INCLUDING ‘BIG’ MONEY!).” This statement underscores the U.S.’s substantial military involvement and financial support in the conflict, contrasting it with what he perceives as inadequate recognition from Ukraine.

The situation has been further complicated by the leak of a contentious 28-point peace plan intended to resolve the war. This plan has drawn scrutiny, with some labeling it a “Russian wishlist.” The controversy intensified on Saturday when confusion arose about its origins. Some senators reported that Secretary of State Marco Rubio had suggested the U.S. might not have been the plan’s author.

Despite these claims, the State Department clarified that the U.S. did indeed back the proposal. Notably, the plan includes a provision for Ukraine to cede the entire Donbas region, a contested area that Russia has struggled to fully capture through military means over the past decade. This aspect of the plan has sparked significant debate and concern over its implications for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.

Ukraine would also have to commit to never joining NATO, slimming down its military force from roughly 900,000 to 600,000 personnel and giving amnesty to everyone involved in the war — meaning that Russians couldn’t face war crime claims.

Meanwhile, the Russians would only be required to make a few concessions.

Trump did not specifically address the plan in his Truth Social post.
