() President Donald Trump is attending a National Day of Prayer event at the White House on Thursday.

The event is part of the annual National Day of Prayer, held each year on the first Thursday in May. In addition to political gatherings, the event encourages Americans to gather in prayer in their communities.

Traditionally, the event includes members of many Christian denominations, including Catholic, Protestant and evangelical Americans, along with members of the Jewish, Muslim, Hindu and Sikh communities.

Trump has enjoyed strong support from white evangelical voters. After taking office, he formed a task force to eradicate “anti-Christian” bias and created a White House faith office.

While those moves enjoyed support from many of his supporters, he has also faced criticism. Opponents have questioned how a faith office fits into the Constitution’s separation of church and state, and others have questioned why a Christian-majority country needs an task force to root out bias.
