Trump tightens security in wake of Charlie Kirk shooting

WASHINGTON () The Trump administration is tightening security following the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at a Utah college campus.

Trump, who has faced two known assassination attempts, has long been a security challenge due to his large rallies and golf outings.

Trump attended the New York Yankees’ 9-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Thursday night to mark the 24th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

Authorities installed security glass for the president outside the upper-level box suite belonging to the Steinbrenner family, which owns the Yankees, on the third base side over the Tigers dugout at Yankee Stadium.

A presidential visit always prompts extra security at sporting events, but things were heightened after Kirk was assassinated Wednesday. When Trump attended the Sept. 11 observance ceremony at the Pentagon earlier Thursday, authorities moved the ceremony inside as an added precaution.

GOP leaders on Thursday quickly opened the door to new funding aimed at protecting House lawmakers. Several members said the shooting will forever alter how members of Congress appear in public and interact with their constituents.

At least one lawmaker, Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., vowed to carry a gun with her at all times.

Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said he’s open to exploring an increase in funding for lawmaker security on top of the boost they got in the last Congress for home security systems and other protections. Personal security details for all 435 members would be too expensive, he suggested, but GOP leaders are “looking at all angles.”

“We’ve got to protect people who run for public office or no one will, and that’s heavy on our hearts and minds,” Johnson said.
