Trump announces 100% tariff on movies made outside US

WASHINGTON () President Donald Trump announced another round of sweeping tariffs Monday, this time targeting the film industry.

On social media, Trump stated that movies made outside the United States will face a 100% tariff.

“Our movie making business has been stolen from the United States of America, by other Countries, just like stealing ‘candy from a baby,'” Trump wrote. “California, with its weak and incompetent Governor, has been particularly hard hit! Therefore, in order to solve this long time, never ending problem, I will be imposing a 100% Tariff on any and all movies that are made outside of the United States.”

It’s unclear who exactly would bear the brunt of the tariff.

Trump on Monday also announced tariffs on “any Country that does not make its furniture in the United States.” Additional details, Trump said, would follow.

Last week, Trump said he will place import taxes of 100% on pharmaceutical drugs, 50% on kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities, 30% on upholstered furniture and 25% on heavy trucks starting on Oct. 1.

Trump has long maintained that tariffs are the key to forcing companies to invest more in domestic factories. He has dismissed fears that importers would simply pass along much of the cost of the taxes to consumers and businesses in the form of higher prices.

His country-by-country tariffs relied on declaring an economic emergency based on a 1977 law, a drastic tax hike that two federal courts said exceeded Trump’s authority as president. The Supreme Court is set to hear the case in November.
