A federal magistrate judge in Miami has mandated that President Trump disclose comprehensive details about his finances to the BBC’s legal team as part of his $10 billion defamation lawsuit against the prominent UK broadcaster.
President Trump alleged that the BBC libeled him by selectively editing his speech from January 6, 2021, delivered at the Ellipse before the Capitol riot. This broadcast was featured in the BBC’s “Panorama” program just days before the 2024 election, reportedly skewing the context of his words and delaying the certification of Joe Biden’s Electoral College victory.
In the original complaint submitted last December, it was asserted that Trump’s business and personal reputation suffered due to what he claims was a misleading portrayal of him as a “violent insurrectionist.” This allegedly caused ongoing economic harm to his brand’s value and his professional and business interests, including his numerous properties and business ventures.
US Magistrate Judge Enjoliqué Lett declared on Tuesday that President Trump must substantiate these allegations with evidence. Lett emphasized that the reputational and economic damages Trump claims are central to the case, with all facets of his brand and enterprises now under scrutiny, as reported by Politico.
Trump’s attorney, Al Brito, contended that the lawsuit’s focus had shifted to reputational damage alone, rather than including the extensive network of over 400 businesses comprising the Trump Organization.
Brito did not immediately say whether he would appeal Lett’s ruling to case judge Roy Altman, a Trump appointee.
