Trump Says Return to War With Iran ‘Highly Unlikely’ Amid Talks

WASHINGTON — President Trump said Sunday that it is “highly unlikely” the United States will resume military action against Iran as long as negotiations over the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program continue to advance.

“It depends on whether or not they sign a very strong agreement,” Trump said in a phone interview. “The answer is, it’s highly unlikely it’s going to be necessary. They’re a failing nation. You saw what came out this year — 301% inflation. It’s highly unlikely it will be necessary.”

“So it’s highly unlikely I’ll have to,” he continued. “They’re withering away financially. We’ve hit them militarily. We could finish them off.”

Trump had previously indicated that he was unlikely to restart the military campaign against Iran before last Tuesday’s midterm elections. Since then, however, he has expressed growing confidence in the progress of negotiations.

Even so, his administration has maintained a blockade around Iran in an effort to further weaken the US adversary economically.

Democrats have pledged to introduce a resolution limiting Trump’s authority to wage war against Iran if they regain control of Congress in January.
