WASHINGTON, DC — On Friday, former President Donald Trump announced that any documents signed by President Joe Biden using an autopen “are hereby terminated.”
“I am canceling all Executive Orders and any other documents not directly signed by Crooked Joe Biden,” Trump shared on his social media platform.
The specific orders or documents Trump is referring to remain unclear, as well as the criteria he is using for this decision. ABC News has requested clarification from the White House.
Trump alleges that the individuals using the autopen acted unlawfully. However, the Department of Justice’s legal counsel affirms that the use of autopens is legally permissible for signing legislation into law.
Trump has consistently criticized Biden’s reliance on the autopen. In June, he accused Biden’s aides of using the autopen illegally to implement “radical” policies and called for investigations by the Justice Department and the White House into Biden’s mental fitness during his presidency. Biden responded to these claims, telling ABC News that the investigation was “nothing more than a mere distraction.”
“Let me be clear: I made the decisions during my presidency. I made the decisions about the pardons, executive orders, legislation, and proclamations. Any suggestion that I didn’t is ridiculous and false,” Biden said in the June statement.
Trump has said he has used an autopen for some trivial matters, but criticized its use for pardons.
