A Tulane men’s basketball player died over the weekend in a “tragic accident,” the school announced on Monday.

Gregg Glenn III, a Health & Wellness major from Pompano Beach, Florida, who started 34 games for the Green Waves last season, was only 22 years old.

Although the university has not released specifics regarding his passing, NOLA.com reported that Glenn tragically drowned while swimming with a friend near Miami’s coast.

Sarah Cunningham, Tulane’s vice president of student affairs, remembered Glenn for his “infectious personality,” noting how he “brightened every room he entered.”

“He was a talented student-athlete who enriched our lives with his spirit, dedication and passion for both sports and academics,” she said in a letter to the university community. “Gregg was an outstanding athlete on our men’s basketball team and an individual who brought joy and light to those around him. His commitment to excellence inspired many of us.”

She added: “Let us remember Gregg not just for his achievements in sports, but for the kindness and warmth he shared with everyone. He will forever remain a part of our university family.”

Glenn averaged 10.6 points per game while shooting 49.8 percent from the field last season for Tulane, finishing as the fourth-highest scorer on the team.

He was second on the Green Wave in assists and rebounds with 5.3 and 3.1, respectively.

“Our program was devastated this morning as we learned of the passing of our beloved Gregg Glenn III,” Tulane coach Ron Hunter said in a statement. “He was not only an exceptional athlete, but also a remarkable person who brought energy, dedication and kindness to our team and community. Gregg’s spirit and passion will be deeply missed, and our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time. We will honor his memory by continuing to celebrate the impact he had on all of us.”

Glenn had transferred to Tulane after his freshman season with Michigan and averaged 9.7 minutes during the 2023-24 campaign before taking on a larger role last season.
