() The life of Charlie Kirk’s suspected assassin could be in jeopardy given Utah state law.

Tyler Robinson, 22, was arrested and booked into a Utah jail after being taken into custody late Thursday night, around 10 p.m. local time, after confessing to his father.

sources said Robinson was on the FBI’s radar Thursday and was initially identified through facial recognition investigative methods.

Tyler Robinson’s arrest

Robinson is being held at the Utah County Jail in Spanish Fork, about 11 miles south of Utah Valley University.

Utah Valley confirmed Robinson attended one semester at the university’s Logan campus as a pre-engineering major. He took a leave of absence after that lone semester.

News of the arrest came hours after the FBI and state officials had pleaded for public help by releasing additional photographs of the suspect, a move that seemed to indicate law enforcement was uncertain of the person’s whereabouts.

Robinson was arrested on suspicion of capital murder, weapons and obstruction offenses. He is expected to be formally charged early next week ahead of an initial court appearance.

Utah governor seeking death penalty

Prior to Robinson’s arrest, Utah Gov. Spencer Cox, who referred to the shooting Wednesday as a “political assassination,” said he would be seeking capital punishment.

According to MSNBC, arrest papers show state authorities intend to pursue the death penalty. Utah is one of 27 states that allow the death penalty.

The president echoed sentiments from Cox during an interview with “Fox & Friends” on Friday.

“I hope he’s found guilty, I would imagine,” Trump said. “And I hope he gets the death penalty.”

The firing squad may be one of the possibilities given Utah’s history. Since 1608, at least 144 civilian prisoners have been executed by shooting in America, nearly all in Utah.

Five states Idaho, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Utah authorize the use of firing squads in certain circumstances.
