The principal of a New York City school is said to be ‘so rude she makes staff sob on a daily basis.’

Carla Ling is the head of PS/MS 20 in Norwood, in the Bronx. Yet her manners appear to scare both her own staff and superiors, resulting in a petition being created pushing for her resignation from the role.

Ling’s alleged antics make her sound more akin to the fictional character Miss Trunchball from Matilda, who rules her school with an iron fist but leaves staff and students cowering in her wake.

Parents and staff have raised concerns and filed complaints with the New York Department of Education over Ling’s alleged behavior detailing how she regularly screams at students and harasses staffers making them cry every day.

But despite her alleged bullying, she has also been accused of slapdash discipline when it comes to rowdy students, and is said to let some children run wild without any punishment.

‘We had one student who threw a stack of lockers down the stairs. If anyone had got hit by those lockers, they would have been killed. Kids clogged up drains. Kids all do kinds of craziness. She never disciplines any of them,’ one staffer told the New York Post.

Ling’s demeanor was said to have been so outlandish it shocked the school district’s deputy superintendent and led to her being formally reprimanded in writing in a March 2022 letter seen by the Post.

Deputy Superintendent Fia Davis described Ling’s tone as being ‘rude, sharp and short. You interrupted me and cut me off several times,’ she stated, during a February phone call.

Davis also called Ling out for being both ‘inappropriate and unprofessional.’

‘If you speak with your supervisor in this matter, I can only imagine how you speak with your subordinates,’ Davis wrote while also noting how the principal had ‘demonstrated unprofessional conduct and insubordination.’

On another occasion, during a phone call with a Department of Education staffer, it came to Davis’ attention how Ling had also yelled at her down the line several times.

The report only added to several other complaints filed by members of the school community regarding Ling’s ‘tone and attitude.’

A petition has now been created demanding Ling resign from her post. So far 220 people have signed it with some sharing more stories of horror.

‘Our students aren’t getting the allotted time needed to learn to read or write as well as the hostility they have to see and hear on a daily basis is not only saddening it is frightening. Mrs Ling berates and belittles her staff and teachers in front of students. Not to mention the way she behaves towards children and parents. People are scared of her or afraid to deal with her,’ the petition reads.

‘I, as well as the majority of the parents witness Mrs Ling every single morning during arrivals yelling and screaming inappropriately at the children and at times at the parents… she avoids us by locking herself in her office and will not speak to anyone, or will come out of her office and speak with parents in a disrespectful nasty tone,’ the petition continues.

‘Her reign needs to end. She has created a hostile work environment which is detrimental to the mental health of all the individuals in the school staff and students alike… This is gross negligence on the behalf of the New York City Department of Education.

‘This so called ‘leader’ is a tyrant who abuses her power and manipulates to dodge responsibility.’

Ling has yet to comment on the allegations made against her.
