National average gas price drops below $3 for first time in four years

In an unexpected turn of events that will surely be celebrated by holiday travelers, GasBuddy reports that gasoline prices have plummeted across all 50 states. This widespread drop has pushed the national average below the $3 per gallon mark for the first time in over four years.

According to the latest data from GasBuddy, the drastic decrease in fuel costs comes at an opportune time, with many Americans gearing up for holiday road trips. The consistency of this downward trend across the entire nation is described as “exceptionally rare,” especially during a period typically associated with higher demand.

Patrick De Haan, who leads petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, expressed his astonishment at the situation. “It’s been more than four years since we’ve seen the national average at such a low point. The rapid pace and widespread nature of this decline are truly noteworthy,” he remarked. He further emphasized that every state has enjoyed some relief at the pump over the past week, a notable achievement given the usually complex factors influencing fuel prices.

GasBuddy, known for its comprehensive tracking of gas prices through user-submitted data and local station discounts, also shared that some stations in states like Oklahoma, Colorado, and Texas have already begun selling fuel at $1.99 per gallon or even lower. If the current market conditions hold steady, such attractive prices might become more common in the months to come.

The company said several dozen gas stations in Oklahoma, Colorado and Texas are already selling fuel for $1.99 per gallon or less, and similar low prices may continue appearing in the coming months if market conditions stay stable.

The drop in fuel costs is being driven by several factors, including easing crude oil prices, added supply from OPEC+, record U.S. oil production and strong refinery output. U.S. refineries have boosted utilization rates, increasing gasoline inventories at a time when demand typically falls during the winter months.

“We could see the national average spend more of the next four weeks below the $3-per-gallon mark than above it—a trend that may continue into the winter before prices begin their typical climb in mid-February,” De Haan said. “As we get closer to 2026, the outlook for another friendly year for motorists is strengthening.”

GasBuddy recommends that holiday travelers shop around for the best prices and consider tools like the GasBuddy app or the Pay with GasBuddy+ membership program, which offers savings of 3 to 5 cents per gallon.
