BIG STONE GAP, Va. (AP) — The Virginia State Police have launched a search for a high school football coach who vanished just days before his team, which has yet to face a loss this season, was set to compete in a playoff match. The coach is facing serious allegations, including possession of child sexual abuse material and using a computer to solicit a minor.

Authorities have identified the coach as 46-year-old Travis L. Turner from Appalachia, Virginia. Warrants were issued on Monday charging him with five counts for each offense. The police indicated that further charges may arise as their investigation progresses. However, specific details leading to these charges have not been disclosed.

Turner disappeared last Thursday when special agents from the Bureau of Criminal Investigation made their way to his residence. Although the intent was to engage him in conversation rather than arrest him, Turner was missing by the time they arrived. A thorough search involving drones, dogs, and rescue teams has been underway to locate him.

Turner serves as the football coach at Union High School, located in Wise County in southwest Virginia. Under his guidance, the team has maintained a perfect record with 12 consecutive victories, propelling them to a regional final scheduled for this Saturday.

Prior to his coaching role at Union, Turner was a quarterback at Appalachia High School, a school that merged into Union High in 2011. His father, Tom Turner, also played a significant role in his athletic journey as his high school coach. Tom Turner achieved recognition by being inducted into the Virginia High School Hall of Fame in 2005.

Defensive coordinator Jason Edwards stepped in as interim head coach in Union’s victory over Graham last weekend, according to the Bristol Herald Courier, which also reported that Bears players didn’t want to talk afterward about the situation involving Turner.

Asked about Turner, Division Superintendent Mike Goforth told the AP in an emailed statement that Wise County Public Schools is aware of charges filed “against a staff member who has been on administrative leave” and that the person isn’t allowed to be on school property or have contact with students. He didn’t disclose when or why that leave began, and said school officials wouldn’t comment further because it’s an ongoing legal matter involving personnel.
