The first episode of Season 2 of The Pitt, titled “7 AM,” brings viewers a fresh face in the form of Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi, portrayed by Sepideh Moafi. This HBO Max medical drama introduces Dr. Al-Hashimi, affectionately referred to as “Dr. Al” by former colleagues Mel (Taylor Dearden) and Mohan (Supriya Ganesh). She steps in to cover for Dr. Robby (Noah Wyle) during his three-month sabbatical. Her arrival, however, creates some tension with Robby, as her approach contrasts sharply with his. While Robby relies on intuition and improvisation, Dr. Al is a staunch advocate for AI and intends to revamp the hospital, starting with its very nickname.
Despite the initial friction, Dr. Al is undeniably skilled and maintains a calm and collected demeanor—at least until the unexpected twist at the conclusion of the season premiere, which might leave viewers puzzled.

Midway through the episode, the plot thickens when a newborn is found abandoned in the restroom of the waiting area. The hospital staff rallies together to care for the child in the pediatric ward, a vividly decorated room that happens to be the site of Robby’s emotional collapse during Season 1.
About halfway through The Pitt Season 2 premiere, an abandoned infant is discovered in the waiting room restroom. Naturally, everyone bands together to take care of the baby girl in peds, the brightly-painted hospital room where Robby coincidentally had his Season 1 breakdown.
At the very end of The Pitt Season 2 Episode 1 “7 AM,” Dr. Mohan shows Dr. Al some of the baby’s test results and the senior physician stops in what appears to be confusion or horror. Even Mohan notices Dr. Al’s strange reaction, asking her boss if she missed something. And that’s that! We don’t know what caused Dr. Al’s reaction.
When DECIDER spoke with Sepideh Moafi, she teased that Dr. Al’s odd behavior will be explained later on in the second season.
“Yeah, I think it ends on a big question mark and a big teaser of like, ‘What’s going on for her?’” Moafi said. “Yes, we will definitely learn more and and we’ll understand the context for that moment throughout the season, later on in the season.”
“But yeah, the answer to that, it’s kind of tentacled and it’s rooted in a huge spoiler,” she said.
As it turns out, Moafi’s performance at the end of Episode 1 even had her co-stars questioning what the heck was going on. Moafi was paired with fellow Pitt star Shawn Hatosy, who said, “When I saw it, I was like, ‘What? Is there something, is it connected to infant care?’ It was so beautifully done. You know, you really go, ‘What is going on?’”
Nevertheless, both actors played coy.
“Oh, it’s so exciting,” Hatosy said. “Wait till you find out.”
There are fourteen episodes left in The Pitt Season 2, so we have plenty of time between now and the April 16 finale to learn more about Dr. Al and her spoiler-y secrets.
