Most NFL coaches and general managers would go to great lengths to secure a genuine NFL quarterback, even if it meant traversing the 1,172-mile expanse of the Dakota Access Pipeline.
However, there’s no need for such drastic measures reminiscent of “The Shawshank Redemption.” Instead, a visit to North Dakota State University will suffice. The school has established a consistent pipeline for quarterbacks entering the NFL, with regular drafts occurring every two years.
North Dakota State is on the brink of joining Ohio State and Alabama in producing the most quarterbacks drafted since 2016. This group includes Carson Wentz, the second overall pick in 2016, Easton Stick in the fifth round of 2019, Trey Lance as the third pick in 2021, Cam Miller selected in the sixth round of 2025, and Cole Payton, a mid-round prospect for 2026. All these players emerged from the Bison’s recruiting domain and are anticipated to be part of NFL rosters as backups in 2026.
