At 27, Kurt Cobain had already become a defining musical legend, his voice resonating with an entire generation. However, the somber conclusion to his life wasn’t captured in melody but detailed in a stark coroner’s report.

The lead singer of Nirvana passed away on April 8, 1994, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, as documented by the King County Medical Examiner. His lifeless body was discovered in the greenhouse of his Seattle residence, accompanied by a handwritten note and a shotgun in his left hand, according to official accounts.

Initially, the details from the autopsy were kept from the public eye, but now, a group of independent forensic experts has provided the Daily Mail with a complete copy. This new revelation has reignited questions surrounding the original ruling on Cobain’s cause of death.

This unofficial forensic team has scrutinized the autopsy alongside crime scene documentation, suggesting that the evidence could indicate homicide rather than suicide.

Bryan Burnett, a specialist in crime scene reconstruction who is part of the team, highlighted inconsistencies such as blood patterns, clothing evidence, and damage to Cobain’s mouth, which he contends do not align with typical suicide cases.

After re-analyzing pictures taken from the scene, Burnett said he identified what he described as an undocumented bloodstain on Cobain’s left pant leg, which he called ‘extraordinary.’

Enhancing an image with Photoshop, he said, revealed a distinct bloodstain, identifiable by its color, texture and pattern. Burnett noted that the clarity of the image rules out any artifact from digital processing.

The stain’s irregular filling and diffuse pattern were consistent with transfer bloodstains on fabrics with uneven surfaces, according to the peer-reviewed study Burnett and his team published in November.

Near the center of the mark, a partially unstained area appears to correspond with a fold in the fabric, which likely blocked blood from reaching that spot.

Burnett concluded that the absence of similar stains on the victim’s left sock and shoe suggests the mark on the lower left pant leg resulted from contact with a bloodied hand or surface.

In his view, blood would be expected to pool around the head in a suicide scenario rather than appear on the lower leg. He speculated it could indicate someone handled Cobain’s body, though no official findings support that interpretation, nor do forensic reports indicate that such a stain was ever documented.

But that was only the first of five distinct clues that the researchers say support their theory.

Burnett also pointed to blood on Cobain’s shirt as evidence that the body could have been moved after his fatal injury.

He suggested that Cobain continued bleeding after the shotgun blast, and the position of the blood suggests the head was titled forward. ‘Cobain was bleeding onto his shirts,’ he said.

Burnett’s forensic analysis suggests that, due to the wound, blood from his mouth, nose and left ear should have flowed directly onto his cheeks, neck and the floor – not his shirt.

The pattern of bloodstains, the new analysis argues, suggests that Cobain’s upper body was lifted, causing his head to tilt forward and his chin to rest on his chest, which would have resulted in blood flowing onto his shirt.

‘After the intraoral shotgun discharge, Cobain’s body was moved, either from a different location in the greenhouse before the staging of his body or, more likely, he was carried up the exterior stairs at the side of the garage to the greenhouse,’ the analysis claims.

The autopsy also detected multiple substances in Cobain’s system, including morphine, codeine, diazepam and heroin.

In the official scenario outlined to the public by Seattle police, Cobain is believed to have injected heroin himself, then put away the drug paraphernalia, walked across the room then shot himself.

The authors of the new analysis, however, proposed an alternative explanation – a third piece of evidence they say supports their homicide theory. They speculated that the drugs could have been administered by another person to incapacitate him – though no such conclusion has been adopted by authorities.

‘Intravenous administration of a heroin dose sufficient to result in a blood morphine level of 1.52mg/L would likely lead to intoxication and sedation too quickly to allow for the series of events in the suicide scenario,’ the scientists’ peer-reviewed report states.

It further adds that an imprint left by the syringe suggests it was injected with sufficient force that it ‘seems unlikely to have been administered by Cobain, and could therefore be consistent with the action by an assailant.’

The Daily Mail has also reviewed the full autopsy used by the forensic scientists, which offers an unflinching look at the scene, Cobain’s injuries and the meticulous documentation that followed.

The King County Medical Examiner’s Office, which never publicly released the autopsy, would neither confirm nor deny its veracity when approached for comment.

The autopsy provided to the Daily Mail was signed by the county’s chief medical examiner Dr Donald Reay, MD and dated June 20, 1994.

According to the documents, the examiner responded to a call around 11am local time on the day Cobain was found and went to the singer’s residence where Seattle Police officers guided his team to the atrium above the detached garage.

Cobain is said to have been found lying on his back, head to the west, feet to the east, clothed in a patterned long-sleeved shirt over a white T-shirt, denim jeans with a black leather belt and multiple layers of pants underneath.

His socks were white, and his black Converse shoes were neatly tied, pictures included in the experts’ paper and notes in the autopsy show.

Cash and coins were found in his pockets, along with miscellaneous papers, an address book and airline receipts from March 30 to April 1, the autopsy states. Personal items recovered at the scene included cash, an address book, a lighter and airline tickets from Los Angeles to Seattle from days prior.

It also makes clear that investigators found no evidence of a struggle beyond broken glass from the atrium entry.

A small piece of paper detailed shotgun ammunition: ‘Remington 20 gauge 2-3/4 shells or shorter setup for light shot 10888925.’

The scene also contained an expended yellow 20-gauge shell, a cigar box with a hypodermic insulin-type needle, shards of glass from the atrium door and a small piece of plastic with residual black tar-like material, per the autopsy.

Drawings and descriptions in the documents also shows the devastating nature of the wound: ‘ENTRANCE WOUND: Located on the superior hard palate 1/2 inch posterior to the anterior incisors is a 3/4 inch x 1-1/4 inch oval-shaped entrance shotgun wound defect.’

The bullet passed through the roof of the mouth and multiple bones at the base and front of the skull, shattering them into fragments, according to the autopsy report.

It then details that the brain was severely damaged, with widespread bleeding on the surface, while the midbrain was completely torn. Approximately 30 small BB lead-type shot and a distorted plastic shotgun shell wad were recovered from his cerebral hemispheres.

But according to Burnett, gas and recoil dynamics during a shotgun discharge create distinctive injury patterns and blood spatter, and he believes Cobain’s injury is inconsistent with a self-inflicted shot – yet another detail researchers believe supports their argument.

According to their analysis, blood patterns on the shotgun suggest it was fired in a different position than how it was found. In Cobain’s case, the shotgun was found resting on his body, with his left hand on the barrel, according to official reports from police at the time.

But the researchers note that gunshot wounds made in direct contact with the head are more likely to produce backspatter, blood that sprays back toward the shooter and nearby objects.

They argued that the force of the recoil should have caused the weapon to jerk away from Cobain’s mouth. Blood spatter, then, should have been visible on his left dorsal hand and the barrel if he had been gripping the shotgun barrel when it was fired.

While blood was found inside the gun’s compensator grooves, the analysis claims no such staining was documented on his hand.

The authors also questioned the angle of the shotgun in Cobain’s mouth, calling it unusual and suggesting it should have raised questions for investigators.

Cobain’s autopsy also shows the shotgun was discharged inside his mouth, striking the hard palate at a downward angle of roughly 35 to 60 degrees. The wound’s location suggested the muzzle was in contact or near contact with the upper rear teeth.

In simulations, a volunteer reported that holding the gun at that angle was awkward and difficult.

The research team said Cobain's left hand should have shown bloodstaining if he had been gripping the shotgun barrel when it was fired, due to expected backspatter. (Pictured is Cobain's left hand)

In addition to the fatal head wound, multiple needle puncture wounds were documented on his right forearm and antecubital fossa, each surrounded by bruising, according to the autopsy.

Tattoos on his left forearm, healing abrasions on the knees and feet, and multiple rings on both hands were also recorded.

Layers of clothing, including camouflage pants, gray sweatpants, white thermal underwear and white briefs, were meticulously documented.

Here, according to Burnett, was the final indicator that supported the researchers’ theory.

He noted that images taken by SPD showed the three layers of clothing under Cobain’s pants had been pushed up on his right leg, creating an overstuffed appearance, while the left pant leg was flat.

Burnett claimed the pants appeared to be pulled down later, but the underlayers were not adjusted, indicating the body could have been carried.

‘To go up the stairs, you have a lot of force from the person on the legs, and the three layers were pushed up onto his thigh,’ he said.

According to the autopsy, tiny, pinprick-sized spots appeared in Cobain’s eyes, which were noted as an important medical finding, consistent with the circumstances of his death.

The internal examination of Cobain’s organs revealed no significant abnormalities outside the head trauma, the autopsy adds.

The heart, weighing 275 grams, displayed only mild thickening of the right ventricle. Both lungs were congested but showed no disease or injury, it states. The liver and other abdominal organs were said to be normal, and microscopic analysis confirmed bleeding in the brain and liver tissue but no heart abnormalities.

Despite the catastrophic damage to the cerebrum and midbrain, the cerebellum, a structure at the back of the head beneath the largest part of the brain, is said to have remained intact.

The chest and abdominal cavities showed no trauma, confirming that the shotgun wound was the sole lethal injury.

Investigators also recorded personal identifiers, including a white hospital wristband that read: ‘Cobain, Kurt 002998014190.’

In the documents, each puncture and abrasion was measured and recorded, creating a comprehensive map of Cobain’s body at the time of death.

The King County Medical Examiner concluded that the cause of death was a self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head.

A spokesperson for the Seattle Police Department (SPD) told the Daily Mail: ‘Kurt Cobain died by suicide in 1994.

‘This continues to be the position held by the Seattle Police Department.’

Still, Cobain’s death remains one of the most examined celebrity deaths of modern times.
