US Airports Face Delays and Disruptions Amid Ongoing Government Shutdown

As the government shutdown stretches into its sixth week, airports nationwide are feeling the strain of the ongoing political deadlock.

The prolonged stalemate between Democrats and Republicans has led to a critical shortage of air traffic controllers, resulting in numerous flight delays and cancellations.

Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey is grappling with delays ranging from two to three hours, while Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas has reported ground delays averaging 40 minutes.

Industry experts warn that holiday air travel could become chaotic if the shutdown persists, with predictions of a potential travel “disaster.”

The Federal Aviation Administration reports that 13,000 air traffic controllers are currently working without pay, facing significant stress, pressure, and fatigue.

“It’s just it’s just an absolute shame, and to call in sick because they’re just they’re mentally exhausted.”

Earlier in October, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy had warned air traffic controllers who had called in sick instead of working without a paycheck during the shutdown risked being fired.

The FAA responded to Duffy, saying, “We continue to reiterate we will never compromise on safety when staffing shortages occur. The FAA will reduce the flow of air traffic to maintain safety.”
