US Embassy Warns of Credible Mass-Casualty Threat at Popular Moscow Tourist Site

The U.S. Embassy in Moscow issued a security alert Saturday, warning of a possible “mass casualty event” at Moscow’s Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve.

In its statement, the embassy said it had received what it described as a credible threat for October 31 at the museum complex, located at Dolskaya Ulitsa 1 in Moscow. U.S. officials said they were working with the relevant Russian authorities in response.

The warning urged people to stay away from the Tsaritsyno Museum area, remain vigilant and avoid crowded locations.

Tsaritsyno was established in 1775 as a summer residence for Catherine II and has since become one of Moscow’s best-known cultural and tourist destinations.

More than two million people visited the museum in 2022, according to remarks made by Moscow Deputy Mayor Natalya Sergunina in 2023. The expansive grounds are also popular with residents who use the area for exercise, recreation and dog walking, said in 2023. The surrounding grounds attract even more visitors, according to The Art Newspaper.

The Moscow security alert also advised people to keep mobile phones and backup batteries fully charged, pay close attention to their surroundings and review their individual safety plans.

The warning came as the war between Russia and Ukraine continues to intensify, with both sides carrying out attacks against targets and infrastructure.

Ukraine struck an oil refinery in southern Russia on Friday, ending a two-week halt in attacks on energy facilities that had been brokered by President Donald Trump between the two countries.

At least 27 civilians were killed the day before in Russian drone and missile attacks across Ukraine, according to the Wall Street Journal.
