In a historic moment for the Winter Olympics, only one American duo managed to qualify for the inaugural alpine skiing men’s team combined event at the 2026 Milan Cortina Games.

WASHINGTON — Team USA showcased a commendable performance in the men’s team combined event, particularly during the giant slalom segment, where their technical prowess was on full display. Despite a challenging recovery from a near-fall during the downhill section, Team USA was unable to secure a spot on the podium in this new Olympic event.

Debuting on Monday, the event requires one athlete to tackle a downhill course while their teammate takes on a giant slalom run, with the combined times determining the team’s standing. It is among several fresh additions to the Winter Olympic lineup this year.

A total of 22 teams representing nine different nations participated in this pioneering competition.

For Team USA, the sole representatives in this category were Kyle Negomir, who navigated the downhill segment, and River Radamus, who took on the challenge of the giant slalom.

How did Team USA perform?

Team USA only put up a single team for the men’s portion of the new discipline at the 2026 Olympics, comprised of Kyle Negomir on the downhill section and River Radamus on the giant slalom.

Negomir nearly DNFed during the downhill race, almost falling over while coming out of one of the smaller jumps around the middle of the course.

Although he was able to recover and steady himself for the rest of the race, Negomir never quite managed to recover the speed and power he had at the beginning of the downhill run.

Despite the near fall, he managed to steady himself enough to come in just over two seconds above the pace. The performance set him to 16th place overall, leaving the chance to medal as a longshot for his giant slalom teammate.

Radamus’ run went better, but his technically solid skiing wasn’t enough to beat the pace time, or to overcome the deficit from the first half of the event. At the end, the American duo landed in 16th place.

Who won the men’s team combined event?

The Swiss were favored to win gold. Italy had a strong contingent, too.

And true to form, Switzerland won handily, with the gold medal team cutting nearly a full second from the pace. Italy, however, failed to medal at all.

Switzerland’s Von Allmen, who also got first place in the men’s downhill, is now the first athlete to win multiple gold medals at the Milan Cortina Olympics.

The silver medal was a tie, going to both the Austrian team and another Swiss team.

The team event doesn’t have one-medal-per-country rules, allowing multiple teams from the same country to reach the podium.

The Americans had one team: Kyle Negomir and River Radamus. They finished 19th in the event.

Women’s event coming up soon

The women will compete in the team event Tuesday, where the U.S. has four pairs in the running. It was announced Monday that downhill winner Breezy Johnson will be paired with Mikaela Shiffrin. The duo won the event at the world championship. They finished ahead of the Swiss combination of Wendy Holdener and Lara Gut-Behrami, who’s out with a knee injury.

The other U.S. pairs are: Jackie Wiles (downhill) & Paula Moltzan (slalom), Bella Wright (downhill) & Nina O’Brien (slalom), Keely Cashman (downhill) & AJ Hurt (slalom).
