FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control (FWACC) rescued one husky from a tree last Friday morning.

FWACC says it all started when the husky, Aurora, chased a squirrel up a tree and could not get back down.

Animal control officers were then dispatched to the scene, where Officer Taylor and Officer Baird responded. After trying to lure her down with treats and encouraging words, Officer Taylor used a catch pole to safely walk her down the tree.

“Seeing this husky in distress, needing our help, all the way from being rescued within those few minutes, and seeing that dog get reunited with its owner,” Delaney Atkinson, Community Outreach Educator at FWACC, said. “Seeing those stories are really heartwarming. It’s not always the case. Unfortunately, we do have to see some hard situations, but that’s just the reality, and that’s another reason why we show up to work every day.”

FWACC shared the officer’s bodycam footage with WANE 15, where Animal Control Officer Taylor guides Aurora down the tree and is reunited with her owner.

Atkinson says this is just one of many things that their animal control officers respond to, and hopes that sharing these behind-the-scenes moments leads to educating the community on the difference animal control officers make every day.

“When we do hear people refer to them as the dog catchers, we understand that might be an old term, and they do help keep dogs safe and cats, and get them to safety if they’re roaming in the community, but, they are doing animal welfare checks on people that call in concerned about animals that might not look too well,” she said. “They are helping the Fort Wayne Fire Department, they help the Fort Wayne Police Department with animals, people that might have gone to jail, and they have pets in their home. So there’s such a huge variety of things that they’re helping with, and other agencies that might not be well known.”

FWACC also advises saying something if you have an animal-related concern. You can get a hold of them by calling 260-427-1244 during operating hours, and 260-449-3000 during holidays, weekends, or non-operating hours.
