(KTLA) – A chaotic scene unfolded at a California port Tuesday morning when dozens of containers fell off a cargo ship.

The Coast Guard said the accident occurred about 9 a.m. at the Port of Long Beach, and early estimates indicate that at least 67 containers went overboard. Video obtained by local affiliate KTLA showed the vessel listing to one side after one stack of containers had collapsed, followed by another.

A smaller vessel was alongside the larger cargo ship, possibly in an effort to catch the falling containers, while a tugboat attempted to push the containers back toward the pier.

Port of Long Beach spokesperson Art Marroquin said in a statement that the cargo containers fell from the ship, the Mississippi, at the Pier G container terminal.

“Cargo operations have been temporarily suspended at the terminal as responders work to secure the containers,” Marroquin said.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
