Dozens injured by strong turbulence during Delta flight

() A Delta Air Lines flight from Orlando landed safely in Austin on Tuesday after a portion of its wing partially detached midair.

Flight 1893, a Boeing 737, was descending toward Austin-Bergstrom International Airport when passengers noticed a section of the left wing appeared to come loose, according to affiliate KXAN.

Passenger Shanila Arif recorded video footage from her window seat showing the flap swaying as the plane flew thousands of feet above the ground.

“During the flight, while the plane was at an altitude of approximately 12,000 feet, we noticed that a part of the wing had broken and was visibly detached,” she told KXAN. “This is a serious safety event.”

The aircraft landed without incident, and Delta confirmed to KXAN that after arrival, “it was observed that a portion of the left wing’s flap was not in place.”

The airline said the plane has been removed from service for maintenance.

”We apologize to our customers for their experience, as nothing is more important than the safety of our people and customers,” a Delta spokesperson said.

There were 62 passengers and six crew members on board the flight, and no injuries were reported.

String of Boeing 737 Max incidents

Tuesday’s mishap was the latest in a series of incidents involving the Max version of Boeing’s bestselling 737 airplane. It has been the source of persistent issues for the company since two of the jets crashed, one in Indonesia in 2018 and another in Ethiopia in 2019, killing a combined 346 people.

Investigators determined those crashes were caused by a system that relied on a sensor providing faulty readings to push the nose down, leaving pilots unable to regain control. After the second crash, Max jets were grounded worldwide until the company redesigned the system.

In May, the Justice Department reached a deal allowing Boeing to avoid criminal prosecution for allegedly misleading U.S. regulators about the Max before the two crashes.

However, Federal Aviation Administration regulators have capped Boeing’s 737 Max production at 38 jets per month while investigators ensure the company has strengthened its safety practices.
