CHESTERFIELD, Va. — A man from Henrico finds himself facing eight felony charges after a violent episode at Virginia State University left five people injured early Saturday morning.
Camron Harris, aged 19, has been singled out as the suspect in this case by Chesterfield County Police. They discovered him hiding in a closet within Seward Hall on the Virginia State University campus around 4 p.m., according to police reports.
Notably, Harris has no affiliation as a student of Virginia State University.
The police clarified that among the victims, only one is a student at the university. The critically injured individual is a 21-year-old man who is not enrolled at the institution. The remaining victims, who suffered non-critical injuries, include a 23-year-old man, a 19-year-old woman, and a 17-year-old male who are not students, along with a 20-year-old male currently attending the university.
The shooting, just after 1:30 a.m. Saturday, prompted a campus lockdown and came as students were getting ready for the new school year.
Chesterfield County police said they responded to the call about a shooting in the area of Boisseau Street and found the five victims suffering apparent gunshot wounds at the scene. It happened near the university’s Quad Annexes.
Harris is being held without bond at the Chesterfield County Jail, police said. They have obtained four warrants for malicious wounding and four warrants for use of a firearm in commission of a felony. Additional charges may be sought in the future, police said.
In a statement posted on social media, VSU said the safety and well-being of its students remain its highest priority. The university urged students to continue monitoring their VSU email for additional safety measures currently in effect and information about available support resources.
For many students and families, the biggest question now is what measures university officials will take to address campus security moving forward as the new academic year begins.
