FSU officials said in an update at 3:17 p.m. Thursday that law enforcement “has neutralized the threat” on campus.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — 3:33 P.M. UPDATE: At least one person was killed and six people were hospitalized after a reported active shooting on the Florida State University campus Thursday, according to reports.
FSU issued an alert to students Thursday, the first being at 12:02 p.m., saying an active shooter was reported in the area of the university’s student union.
Here’s the latest information.
At least 1 dead, 6 injured in shooting
ABC News is reporting that at least one person is dead after the shooting.
A Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare spokesperson confirmed that one person was in critical condition and five others were in serious condition following the incident on FSU’s campus.
1 suspect in custody
The Associated Press reported that one suspect is in custody.
FSU officials said threat ‘neutralized’
UPDATE 3:45 P.M. FSU officials said “law enforcement has neutralized the threat on campus.”
Students are asked to avoid the Student Union, Bellamy Building, HCB Classroom Building, Rovetta A&B, Moore Auditorium, Shaw, Pepper, Hecht House and Carraway as they are still considered an active crime scene.
Students are asked not to return to these buildings to retrieve personal property.
Officials said students are free to move about other areas of campus.
Individuals who may have witnessed anything of value should call 850-891-4987.
Reunification location established
The City of Tallahassee Police Department said a student reunification point is being established at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center.
FSU school officials said students who need assistance can go to the location where the university is offering counseling, health care and other support services.
FSU classes canceled
FSU officials canceled all classes, university events and business operations through Friday, and athletic events in Tallahassee have been canceled throughout the weekend.
FSU student recounts receiving alert from school officials
The student, Kayla Grogan, said she was in English class when someone in the classroom raised their hand with the school’s urgent alert message sent out to students.
“We were just doing a peer review and someone just raised their hand and said they got a text from FSU saying there’s an active shooter, so we kinda just did what we do in high school, where we all go to the back away from windows and doors,” Grogan said.
Trump has been ‘briefed’ on FSU situation
President Donald Trump said during a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni that he has been briefed on the situation.
“I’ve been briefed on the Florida State University, Tallahassee, active shooting, I guess it’s an active shooter. Fully briefed as to where we are right now, it’s a shame, it’s a horrible thing. Horrible that things like this take place and we’ll have more to say about it later,” Trump said.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said, “The President has been briefed on the shooting at Florida State University and the White House is actively monitoring the situation.”
The governor responds
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis issued the following statement on X:
Multiple agencies responding
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement said it is actively engaged in the incident and will provide additional information as soon as possible.
FBI Jacksonville and the Tallahassee Resident Agency are on scene at FSU, assisting local law enforcement.
FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said his agency is on the scene and is working to get updates.
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier’s office is also responding to the “active shooter” situation on the campus, and said he will provide updates as they become available.
Leon County Commissioner Brian Welch said on social media that the county is activating the Emergency Operations Center in support of law enforcement and healthcare partners.
FAMU cancels classes
Florida A&M University has canceled all classes and student activities on its main campus in response to the shooting.
