Washington Post editorial board backs Maduro capture, Venezuela strikes

(The Hill) — On Saturday, the Washington Post’s editorial board applauded President Trump’s successful operation to capture Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro, describing the military endeavor as “a significant triumph for American interests.”

“People across the globe, particularly in Venezuela, are rejoicing over the ousting of dictator Nicolás Maduro,” the editorial noted. “President Donald Trump’s decision to apprehend him on Saturday stands out as one of the most daring actions by a president in recent years, marking an undeniable tactical success.”

The board emphasized the importance of this achievement leading to positive change in Venezuela, saying, “The goal now is to ensure this victory paves the way for Venezuela’s stability and prosperity rather than a return to previous turmoil, or worse.”

The Post commended the U.S. defense and security sectors, stating, “The capabilities of America’s military, intelligence, and cyber forces are unmatched,” while highlighting Maduro’s capture as “a clear message to minor dictators both in Latin America and globally: Trump delivers on his promises.”

“For months, Trump indicated that Maduro’s grip on power was untenable, yet the illegitimate leader of Venezuela held on,” the board continued. “Now, what are Iranian leaders contemplating as they face widespread anti-government protests? Are Cuban communists resting easily after Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a warning on Saturday?”

The president, during remarks from Mar-a-Lago on Saturday, told reporters that the U.S. would “run” Venezuela’s government in the interim and its oil capabilities “until such time as we can do a safe, proper, and judicious transition.”

The authors said Trump would be “wise to reconsider” not supporting Nobel Peace Prize winner and Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado as the country’s next president. The board also advised against backing Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodriguez to succeed Maduro.

Maduro, the board said, could have stepped down, “retired and lived a luxury lifestyle in Moscow or Minsk.

“Instead, he will probably die in prison,” it continued. “It’s an all-time miscalculation.”

The Venezuelan leader and his wife Cilia Flores were flown out of the South American nation overnight by the U.S. Army’s Delta Force via helicopter. The duo are being transported to New York via the USS Iwo Jima, where they will face narco-terrorism charges.

Attorney General Pam Bondi unveiled a superseding indictment on Saturday that builds on charges initially filed against Maduro in 2020.
