Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky experienced a fall on Thursday while making his way to the Capitol for voting. The incident occurred in the basement of the Russell Senate Office Building.
Video footage captures the moment McConnell, initially holding the hand of an aide, releases it to walk independently. At that point, members of the Sunrise Movement—a group advocating for climate action—approach him with questions regarding ICE. McConnell remains silent in response, but subsequently falls, using his left hand to brace himself.
Assisted by an aide and a security officer, McConnell is helped back to his feet. In a gesture of reassurance, he smiles and waves to the camera.
At 83, McConnell has been a senator since 1985 and led the Republican Party from 2006 to 2024. Recently, he has experienced episodes where he appeared to freeze when answering questions.
Earlier this year, McConnell announced that he would not be running for an eighth term when his current term ends in 2026.
