Residents want a makeover for the vacant school building that’s located at 2114 Commonwealth Ave.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — There will be a community meeting at 6 p.m. on Thursday at the Wallace Small Senior Center in Jacksonville to discuss a possible conversion of West Jacksonville Elementary School to a community center.

The school, located at 2114 Commonwealth Ave., has been vacant for at least five years, a meeting organizer said.

A release from District 9 Jacksonville City Council Member Tyrona Clark-Murray said the conversion could cost $2 million and is central to plans to “re-envision Westside Park in the Robinson’s Addition Neighborhood.”

“In spite of its closing, the community has fond memories of their children and themselves attending the beloved school,” the release states. “Repurposing it as a community center makes it an asset to this neighborhood.”

Residents will have an opportunity to provide input for the center and park design. Jacksonville Parks, Recreation and Community Services Director Darryl Joseph will speak at the meeting. The meeting will be hosted by Clark-Murray.

The Wallace Small Senior Center, located at 1083 Line St., will house a community group formerly located in New Town and spearheaded by Mia Hobdy. They will provide various services to the seniors and youth in the Robinson’s Addition Community, according to the release.
