Peace Officers Memorial Day honors local, state and federal peace officers who were killed or disabled in the line of duty.

TAMPA, Fla. — Flags across Florida will be lowered Thursday to honor all local, state and federal peace officers who were killed or disabled in the line of duty.

Gov. Ron DeSantis announced the flags will be lowered at all local and state buildings, installations and grounds from sunrise to sunset for Peace Officers Memorial Day.

Former President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation creating Peace Officers Memorial Day and National Police Week to honor the legacy of law enforcement heroes, according to a news release from the governor.

“On May 15, we pay tribute to those officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the safety and freedoms of Floridians,” the release stated.

This week is also National Police Week, which runs until Saturday. Hillsborough County State Attorney Suzy Lopez said in a social media post the week is for honoring law enforcement throughout the community and country.

“We also take this time to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Their bravery and service will never be forgotten,” she stated.
