Woman Detained After Confessing to Fabricating Burglary and Assault Narrative

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Authorities in El Paso have arrested a 52-year-old woman on Tuesday, October 21, following allegations that she fabricated a report about a burglary and an assault last month. The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office (EPCSO) confirmed the arrest.

Maribel Wong, 52, faces charges for making a false report to a peace officer. She was taken into custody at the El Paso County Detention Facility, with her bond set at $4,000.

On September 9, law enforcement officers responded to a residence on the 900 block of Stamfordham Drive. Wong had reported that an unidentified individual had broken into her home and attacked her.

However, after conducting a preliminary investigation, deputies found no evidence to back up Wong’s allegations, as stated by the EPCSO.

Detectives later determined the messages had been sent by Wong herself. When confronted, she admitted to fabricating the story, according to EPCSO.

“When someone files a false report, it takes valuable time and resources away from real victims and ongoing investigations,” Sheriff Oscar Ugarte said. “The Sheriff’s Office reminds the public that filing a false report is a serious offense and will not be tolerated.”
