DENVER (KDVR) A woman was hit by a possible stray bullet while she was lying in bed in her Colorado home on Thursday morning.

The Aurora Police Department said 37-year-old Danielle Smith was shot while in bed after midnight on Thursday.

affiliate KDVR spoke with Smith, who was watching television with her dog when she heard multiple popping sounds. At first, she didn’t think she was shot.

“My shoulder felt like it exploded, my whole arm was just on fire,” said Smith.

Smith called 911 and was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. She was hit in the back, and the bullet came out through her arm. Smith said the bullet missed all her arteries and was inches away from her heart.

“I didn’t know what it was, I didn’t think I got shot,” said Smith.

Smith has children who live upstairs as well, but they weren’t in the house at the time, and no one else was injured in the shooting.

After the initial investigation, police said she doesn’t appear to be the intended target, and it may have been a stray bullet fired from an unknown location. Smith said that shootings are common in her neighborhood, and she wants to get out of the area.

“There’s really nothing you can do at this point. It’s so far gone that even the police can’t help this neighborhood,” said Smith.

There were no shell casings in the area, and at this time, there is no one in custody.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867. Tipsters can remain anonymous and still be eligible for a cash reward.
