Juan Soto, who?
The Yankees’ social media team playfully teased former Yankee player and the Mets in a video published online before their American League Wild Card matchup against the Red Sox on Tuesday.
In the approximately 2 ½ minute clip, broadcaster Ryan Ruocco delivers the narration, and at one point states, “and sometimes change is exactly what is needed.”
As Ruocco voices this line, the video shows Soto, now a Met, striking out, followed by a scene of Cody Bellinger hitting a home run off José Cabrera, a Mets pitcher, at Yankee Stadium during their series in May.
The Yankees acquired Bellinger in a trade with the Cubs on Dec. 17, 2024, days after the Mets had signed Soto to a massive 15-year, $765 million deal to lure him away from The Bronx.
The Mets had been crowned one of the favorites to make it to the World Series after Soto left, and his departure had spurred debates over whether New York was a Mets or Yankees town.
The Mets had their season come to an epically disappointing end on Sunday when they were eliminated from postseason contention with a loss to the Marlins, while the Yankees have the chance to play into October as a wild card.
Several users online took notice of the very poignant edit, with one person declaring, “cook admin.”
Another person wrote online, “Love the jab at Soto.”
“Bro, they cookin Soto still. F–king epic. Hope we win it all, so we can victory lap his punk ass. Nothing worse than a yankee scorn,” a third person opined online.
The Yankees will need to beat the Red Sox twice this week in order to keep their season going, but credit their social media team for getting an early W going into the wild-card series at Yankee Stadium.
