Yankees' Will Warren in thick of race to replace Gerrit Cole

TAMPA — As he moves up the depth chart this spring training, each outing has high stakes for Will Warren.

There is 1 paragraph in the content.

Warren allowed two hits and two runs (one earned) though only struck out one across 3 ²/₃ innings in a 10-2 win.

“Not a lot of strikes and didn’t attack early,” said Warren, who threw 33 of his 57 pitches for strikes. “But overall, I think it’s nice to get one of those out of the way. Compete a little bit. I don’t even know if I had a strikeout today. Probably not. But, yeah, just attacking the zone even if I’m behind in the count shows where I’m at and I’m just trying to minimize the damage.”

The rookie — after getting roughed up in spot duty last season — has found himself in the running to make the rotation as injuries have sidelined Luis Gil and Gerrit Cole, who has decided to undergo Tommy John surgery after meeting with Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles on Monday.

In four spring outings, Warren has pitched to a 1.54 ERA in 11 ²/₃ innings.

Warren, who is on the 40-man roster, is considered the front-runner for the final rotation spot, with Marcus Stroman ticketed to be the No. 4 starter.

Veteran Carlos Carrasco, journeyman Allan Winans and prospects Sean Boyle and Cam Schlittler could also be in the mix for the fifth spot.

Despite an outing not at his best, Aaron Boone is “really excited” about where Warren is at.

“I thought even today was just another good day when I don’t even think he was necessarily at his best, and that’s important, too,” Boone said. “I just think he made big strides. He’s put himself right smack in the middle of the conversation.”

The pressure hasn’t gotten to the young pitcher, and he declared he is ready for the job and “came into camp thinking that, too.”

“Nothing’s changed mentally,” Warren said. “The opportunity has now presented itself, unfortunately, because of the circumstances. But, yeah, I came into camp knowing I need to go earn a spot and take a spot. So, I haven’t changed my mindset on that. You gotta do what you’re supposed to do. Go out and show them who Will Warren is.”
